Early morning finds the Director (predictably) sequestered away in his office, taking a break from reviewing the records of new recruits (for once) in order to call upon an Enforcer, an old colleague turned friend. A friend who he should hate to worry, and he fears that his absence this afternoon—during the time they'd set away to take lunch together—would do just that.
And so, an explanation is duly and rightfully owed, the fact that he's calling at all a testament to how very much he's grown over the years, for--...
There had been a time, not long ago, where he would have disappeared without a word, determined to play the role of Atlas and shoulder the world's burdens on his lonesome. ]
Ju-vi-a. [ —he greets upon her answer, his cadence playful, his voice warm and bright. ] Good morning.
[ It doesn't take her long to pick up— Juvia makes it a point to try and cater to the people she cares for as much as she can. That includes picking up (literally) the second after she sees his contact flashing on her screen.
But that means she hasn't given herself much time to think about how she's going to position the phone, so her initial response sounds more like a struggle than a proper greeting. ]
Sion!! [ Her day's barely starting, beginning with her having set her gear aside and barely putting her boots on, phone scrunched between her ear and neck. She sounds excited, just a little surprise, but still returning his warmth with full force. ] Good morning to you, as well!
Juvia is fine. She's just getting everything ready for today.
[ It's not often she gets calls, which is part of the reason why there's a deep breath on her end that sounds like a little too satisfied. ]
Ah? [ Pity, that Juvia isn't privy to the smile which curves the Director's lips as he listens to the bit of commotion on the other end of the line, the corners of his eyes crinkling with a fondness reserved for the measure of exuberance she brings to any and every conversation. ] I suppose it is about that time, isn't it?
[ Read: no, he hasn't yet had breakfast, but privately hopes his non-committal answer will slide. ]
It was a late night and earlier morning, with the ongoing internal affairs review.
[ Tasked with the duty of 'cleaning house', Sion had been given instruction to assess the loyalties of several Company agents both new and old alike, checking for ties to the True Leithians responsible for the attack on the Family Registry Bureau, but with the assignment complete, his sights are now set elsewhere, to a place...
...where he would have no one else follow, unless they received direct order from the Company's upper echelon. ]
Thankfully, I do not believe you will be directly impacted by the investigation.
[ For her file had been one he'd immediately cleared of suspicion, the fact that it had at all been in his possession never coming to light. ]
Although— [ And here, there is a pause, heavy and resounding. ] —have you seen the news?
[ She stops slipping on her other boot to make a face at that response. She knows exactly what he's trying to say without saying it. Although she honestly expected it, having gone through this song and dance before with Sion, she still asked.
And now, as per usual, she will try and pack something. Or at least try to, before realizing she doesn't have any time. She stomps her boot on, keeping it snug, soon reaching for her gloves after.
She does know that Sion is a busy person-- he has more importance than someone like her, so it only makes sense he would have a bigger workload. Something as simple as him being busy didn't come to mind though until he mentioned it. ]
Thank you, Sion. [ She sounds a little resigned, this time. ] It's hard to believe that one of us might've had a hand in this.
[ She doesn't understand why someone would do that.. ]
Ah, yes! Although, it depends on what you mean.. [ She doesn't think anything involving the unrest in Old Town would make Sion sound like that, so she blurts out the next thing. ] Do you mean Leith?
[ Her instincts are sharp, as they always have been, and are made keener still by the bond they share. She knows him, enough such that she still reminds him to take meals despite his proclivity to miss them, her care something which the Director is grateful for and uncertain of how to repay. Always, his wish for Juvia has been for her to pursue that which makes her most happy; that she remain whole and hale, and yet...
It is difficult, isn't it, while wearing the Company uniform she dons now, even if Juvia herself is resilient, as buoyant as ever. ]
The most recent reports regarding the Leithian infection have only grown more critical overnight, and so--...
Juvia doesn't mind! It's ok if you're too busy to have lunch.
Maybe tomorrow?
[ She says it almost immediately, not drawing the connection between what he brought up and what he's telling her now. Maybe it's him working until the break of dawn, relaying his worries about what's going on in their world to her because it's too much for him to handle! For Juvia, it's far too easy to jump to this much safer conclusion rather than any alternatives. ]
[ Eventually, she comes to the conclusion just a few seconds after, feeling foolish for assuming otherwise. It's his tone that made her think it over, and it's his words that causes a distinct pitter patter in her chest. One that she can only translate as anxiety. She grabs the phone and positions it properly, brows furrowing immediately. ]
Sion. You're not thinking of going there, are you?
[ She can understand wanting to help people but...! ] Juvia thinks you should stay. [ Not without immediate protection. But even then, everyone would be at risk. Sion would be at risk! The idea of anyone being sick-- well, sick isn't the word they're using. She wishes it was though, because being 'sick' feels a lot more manageable than being 'infected'. She presses her lips into a line, suddenly wishing this wasn't a phone call but he was there in front of her.
She was sure she could shake some sense into him! ]
No, it is not a good idea for most. [ —he affirms after the breadth of a moment, wondering precisely how he is to reassure her. And when the realization strikes, it startles him, because it is the very first time he hasn't felt that divulging a secret (his secret, the reason for his many security details; why he is seldom granted the freedom to venture outside of the Company command post without the presence of an Enforcer) would hurt someone. ] But it is a good idea for me, and that is why a warrant has been issued for my safe escort to Leith.
My body... cannot catch ill. When I was still a boy, newly enrolled in the Company's military academy, I was made— [ Enhanced, he does not say. ] —to be invulnerable to many things.
Sickness is one of them.
[ And while there are more, now isn't the time to discuss them. Perhaps later, upon his return, but for now--... ]
If my presence upon Leith may spare someone else from being deployed, it is well worth my time.
[ Especially if that someone should be like Juvia. Juvia, who had been so innocent in asking maybe tomorrow?.
[ Any protests she has dies out, stuck in her throat. Despite him telling her, Juvia somehow feels like she's still the last one he's told-- but she swallows that feeling down too. As much as she wants to tell him (continuously, mind you) to not walk his way over there, to not get sick even if he can't, she can't find it in herself to say don't help those people.
For her, it's easy to disconnect from their situation because she won't be on Leith. There's enough going on in Old Town, at home, and at the Company, that it's almost enough to push back the plight going on there. ]
You're going to let me see you before you leave.
[ She can run quick enough to make it if she tries hard enough. It just doesn't sit well with her, having only just a call for them to part ways with. And now, she needs to figure a way to sneak in questions about his mysterious past! Juvia may be dense, but she can catch a carefully worded sentence when she hears one. ]
[ god it's not like. jack is any better. I'm so glad that this of all things is the conversation they're having ]
uh super? like damn don't run into people with family goals a lot because uh. westerley sucks. basically. but hey that just makes it more awesome! or something
idk point is 10/10 I approve
big dogs are where it's AT too. like haven't had one in forever myself but yes if a dog looks like it could knock me the hell over it's a good dog. especially if it could attack rivals. best dog
[ oh my god same... this is the Pure Wholesome Content I didn't know I needed until now ]
oh yes..100/10 i agree! a lot of people are busy trying to figure out their love lives or focus on work so i don't get to talk about this a lot with anyone ): ok don't judge me please juvia wants to have a big family...
what about you???
and ESPECIALLY if it can destroy rivals. i've never had a dog before but.... i like the really fluffy ones... the big ones that look like their eyes are covered from how much fur they have? those! they're kind of floppy a little
hey no judgement at all! would've probably liked the same buuuut wifey wasn't as big of a fan of that plan! so. small family. that and I mean company doesn't pay people JACK (heh) even when you've got a kickass job soooo small is kinda the reasonable thing anyways
hell yeah for the dog though. I mean why don't you get one?? unless you work like all the friggin time which would not be surprised (see above about the company being slave drivers sometimes etc) but. other than that!
Because of the riots, right? That's to be expected.
They're putting together those charities and my family said it would be good for me to show my face. Help give us a good reputation, though I doubt it really matters what I do there.
call; dated to w3d3!
